introduction:

I am proficient in various holistic therapies: conventional Western massage techniques (Swedish as well as deep-tissue techniques), Hawai’ian Kahuna massage (Lomi-lomi), reflexology, and reiki (a form of energy work). Over my years of practice, I have followed a path of intuitive integration of these therapy forms in accordance with each client’s individual needs. For example, a ‘straightforward’ back/neck/shoulders massage could be enriched with elements of Lomi-lomi technique; a foot massage could include the stimulation of key reflexology points as well. We start with a brief but focused consultation to clarify what form the specific treatment for the day should take. Although I list a few suggested treatment modalities and durations below, I am totally flexible with respect to the duration of a treatment as well as its content.

my general approach to healing work:

Through my practice, I have witnessed the integration of body, mind, emotions, and spiritual awareness in my clients. The effectiveness of my treatment is magnified by approaching each client with due acknowledgement of their holistic being and directing the flow of my treatment accordingly. I focus on guiding your body and your awareness to a deep state of relaxation, replenishment, and balance. A serene and calming ambience is created to ease your path to that still point where you will gain the maximum benefit from my treatment. Calming music played at low volume, soft lighting, and gentle, subdued aromas are integrated into the treatments in my home studio.

I provide complimentary spring water and a healthy snack after your treatment. There might be a slight oil residue remaining on your skin following your treatment; please keep this in mind when selecting your garments. An ample supply of clean towels is available to wipe off excess oil, should you wish to do so.

hawai’ian kahuna (lomi-lomi) massage

Lomi-lomi is a truly remarkable massage tradition that has been practised in the Hawaiian islands (and, in varied forms, on other Polynesian islands) for many centuries. It became known outside of Hawai’i over the past four decades. I practise traditional temple style lomi-lomi massage, using appropriate draping to complement the unique flowing movements of this extraordinary massage practice. Amongst its many other traditional applications, Lomi-lomi has been used as a ritual to accompany life transitions. It is common for Lomi-lomi therapists (myself included) to approach the giving of a Lomi-lomi treatment with deep reverence and humility. In some quarters, it is called ‘the massage journey to the stars’. This treatment usually engenders a very deep state of relaxation and a strong sense of body integration.

In general, the duration of my Lomi-lomi treatments is either 50 minutes (for massage only on the back of the body, including the back, shoulders, arms, and legs) or 70 minutes (adding treatments of the front of the legs, hands, abdominal area, and the head). Each treatment takes on a unique flow, and a treatment will be allowed to continue for longer if the client has need of it. I leave ample time open in my schedule before and after Lomi-lomi treatments.

Fee: R 520 for 50 minutes; R 700 for 70 minutes.

holistic and deep-tissue massage

Holistic massage: My unique fusion of various massage techniques integrates elements of Swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, Lomi-lomi massage and other modalities into a deeply relaxing and harmonising treatment.

Deep-tissue massage: I am often asked to relieve strained and/or aching muscles and deep-tissue massage then becomes the focus of my treatment. I take care to avoid over-working a particular area during a session, as that could be counter-productive by slowing down the process of healing and recovery.

I am very flexible with regards to the specific structure and actual duration of your treatment. However, I do have a set of standardised treatments which serve as a guideline. These are listed below.

Holistic back, neck and shoulders massage: an excellent choice for a first experience of holistic massage therapy.

Fee: R480 for 45 minutes

holistic back, neck, shoulders, and legs massage: this treatment combines a deep, holistic massage of your back, neck, and shoulders with deep and relaxing work on your feet, calves, and hamstrings. You will remain lying on the front of your body for the entire session.

Fee: R640 for 65 minutes.

holistic full body massage: this treatment encompasses a deep, holistic massage of your back, shoulders, feet, legs (front and back), arms, hands, neck and head (and abdominal area if requested). Appropriate draping is provided throughout.

Fee: R850 for 90 minutes

reflexology

This technique fills a particular niche and is exceptionally effective for some clients. I practice foot reflexology, the most common form of reflexology at present. The feet offer a larger map of the body than the hands do, allowing for greater precision. Most people have more sensitive skin on their feet than on their hands, allowing a deeper response to the treatment. My standard treatment rate appears below. Treatments may also be adapted to shorter (for example, when ony a few of the body’s systems need attention) or longer durations on request.

Fee: R400 for 45 minutes.

reiki/energy work

I received my reiki training in 2019-2020 and am a level II practitioner. I have also made a study of Barbara Brennan’s approach to energy work and participated in a workshop presented by her School of Healing. Energy work requires a detailed pre-treatment consultation to ascertain the client’s needs and purpose with the treatment. An individualised treatment session will be suggested after the consultation. Fees will be time-based, at a rate broadly similar to the rates quoted for massage therapy.
